Waterford’s star striker Sean Maguire has been grabbing the attention of cross channel clubs and West Ham are reported to have made a bid for the 18-year-old tonight.

Any close observers of the League of Ireland First Division this year will have seen Sean Maguire light up the league with Waterford. The 18-year-old striker scored 12 goals in 24 games and he is already capped for Ireland at underage level.

He has been the subject of interest from a host of English clubs, including Blackpool, Brighton & Hove Albion, Derby, Peterborough and Charlton but West Ham took him on trial last week and Big Sam obviously liked what he saw.

Sky Sports are reporting this evening that the Hammers have made a bid for Maguire and they hope that a deal can be concluded during the January transfer window.

This is great news for Maguire, and potentially for Ireland down the line. If you haven’t seen Maguire in action, the goal he scored above for the Irish schools team should give you an idea of what he is capable of.

With Robbie Keane not getting any younger, a tricky, quick-thinking finisher is just what Ireland need. A move to a Premier League club might be the first step to making sure Maguire is that finisher.
