Ulster flanker Stephen Ferris is hopeful that surgery on his ankle may have saved his season, but the talisman is expected to be out for up to three months.

Ferris has had a string of injuries over the years and this latest set-back will rule him out of Ulster’s Heineken Cup pool games and will leave him as a doubt in the run-up to the Six Nations campaign.

He underwent the knife to repair a tendon in his ankle after picking up the injury against Edinburgh almost five weeks ago. Why it has taken so long to undergo surgery is not known, but Ulster have not said when they expect their Irish international to return to the fold.

Such an operation usually rules a player out for around 12 weeks and that would see Ulster miss their blind-side flanker for some crucial games.

The player himself took to Twitter last night to show his positivity.

We wish Stephen all the best in his recovery. With Ulster flying at the moment, a Six Nations up for grabs, not to mention a Lions Tour on the horizon, we hope he makes a speedy return.
