Ireland’s longest serving coach will feel very hard done by given his impressive CV that he was not even considered for an interview for the role once Elwood departs at the end of the season.

Following a meeting between Connacht officials and the IRFU on Tuesday it was decided that O’Sullivan would not be given an interview, which has naturally come as a disappointment to the coach.

“I am very disappointed that I didn’t get called to interview. I thought it was reasonable to expect to sit down with them to discuss the vision I had for Connacht, especially given my background,” he is quoted as saying in this morning’s papers.

“It is extremely disappointing not to get that opportunity to lay out my vision for Connacht,” he added.

The decision not to consider the former Triple Crown winning coach for the short-list will come as a surprise, but Connacht CEO Tom Sears has remain tight-lipped about the names being touted for the position.

“It is a confidential process. The only person I will comment on will be the person we appoint,” he said.

Former Ospreys coach Sean Holley, Clermont backs coach Alex King, former Auckland coach Pat Lam and former Sale boss Tony Hanks are thought to be the forerunners for the post, with Connacht assistant coach Dan McFarland and backs coach Billy Millard also thought to be in contention.
