And he would have scored it too if it wasn’t for those pesky kids if he wasn’t so unselfish.
Chances are that the best goal we’ll see scored in a Gaelic Football match this year won’t arrive until the Championship is in full swing later this summer, but if Ben McCarron had put the finishing touches to a truly amazing individual run during the Mallon Cup Final today then it certainly would have been a contender come the end of the season.
The Lumen Christi captain was on the losing side in a thrilling Mallon Cup decider at Edendork earlier today despite scoring 4-5 of his team’s 5-6 tally from midfield as Lumen Christi lost out by four points to a St Columban’s Kilkeel outfit that scored 6-7 in reply.
McCarron could have had an even greater individual tally had he opted to be more greedy at the end of one solo run that started when he collected the ball from his own ‘keeper’s kickout and proceeded to run almost the entire length of the field (we counted seven opposition defenders trying to stop him) before deciding to pass it to a team-mate when bearing down on the St. Columban’s goal, where the ‘keeper made an impressive point-blank save to keep the ball out.
Granted, McCarron is obviously a little bit more physically developed than some of the opposition, but to post that tally (from midfield) and to embark on a run like that in a final marks him out as one for the future.
Remember the name folks.
