Fairytale Hansel and Gretel has been given a make-over. They’ve grown up and are hungry for witch blood.
By Genna Patterson
You may remember the childhood tale of Hansel and Gretel, originally written down from folklore tales by the Brothers Grimm.
Hansel and Gretel’s stepmother urges their father to leave them to starve in the woods as they haven’t enough food to go around. The first time the kids return via a trail of stones, but the second time they use breadcrumbs and birds eat them.
The kids stumble across a house made of cakes and sweets and the old lady AKA the witch lures them in. She locks Hansel up to fatten him up and uses Gretel as a slave.
The witch is blind so does not see when Hansel pokes a bone through the cage, fooling her that he is not getting fat enough. The witch decides to cook him anyway, and Gretel too, so attempts to get Gretel to ‘check the heat’ on the fire.
Gretel fools the witch into checking first and then pushes her into the fire where she burns.
Now scratch that, because the kids have grown up. Having taken down their first witch as youngsters, they’ve grown up hell bent on destroying child-eating witches.
Now, this isn’t some sissy fairytale, no. We’re talking badass fighting machines and inventive and particularly nasty ways to kill their prey.
Don’t feel bad, the witches are evil. They kidnap children, fatten them up and eat them. It’s time for a bit of revenge.
Unfortunately for Hansel and Gretel, the witches are on to them and team up to take them down.
Hansel is played by the Oscar nominated Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker and The Bourne Legacy), while Gretel is played by Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Quantum of Solace).
