The rumour mill has been going into overdrive this morning linking Jonathan Sexton with a move to Top 14 club Racing Metro.

This morning saw a flurry of activity on Twitter with RTE’s rugby correspondent Michael Corcoran retweeting the rumour that the Irish out-half might be on his way according to French media reports.

The commentator did suggest later that he doesn’t believe that Sexton would leave and that it will strengthen his position during negotiations with the IRFU.

Just how serious these rumours are is difficult to tell at this stage. Last year Luke Fitzgerald was also linked with a similar move before coming to an agreement with the IRFU. Rob Kearney and Brian O’ Driscoll have also been rumoured to have considered moving to France in the past for a new challenge, but all decided against it.

The IRFU have given tax incentives for players to remain on these shores which has worked in the past and in terms of rugby, there are very few clubs that would offer the high standards set by the European champions and Metro would not fall into that bracket.

We will have to see if it is idle speculation or whether Sexton is thinking of pastures new.
