Darlan was viewed as the leading British fancy for the Champion Hurdle and he looked to have the measure of Rock On Ruby when looming upsides at the last, but he stepped at the flight and suffered a horrific fall

Jockey AP McCoy decided not to partake in any more races for the day and condolences have been expressed quickly on Twitter to a horse that looked to have a great career ahead of him.

For owner JP McManus and all those concerned it is a very sad day indeed. Trainer Nicky Henderson was particularly upset afterwards.

“It’s some game isn’t it. Why always the good ones?” he said.

A great loss to the world of horse racing.
