Al Pacino turns his skills to a HBO TV movie about music producer Phil Spector and his murder trial in 2009

by Genna Patterson

In the new HBO movie Phil Spector, about the successful music producer, Al Pacino plays the weirdly-dressed accused on trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. Helen Mirren is Linda Kenney Baden, his defence attorney.

Spector, 73, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 1989 and has worked with music greats such as Tina Turner, John Lennon, The Righteous Brothers and the Ramones over the years.

The producer was accused of second-degree murder by shooting Clarkson in his own home in California. Spoiler alert – if you don’t know what happened in the real court case and don’t want to know how it ended, look away now. Spector was convicted and is currently serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life. So we guess that’s how the movie will end then.

The movie was directed and written by David Mamet (director of The Unit) and also stars Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor.

Whatever crimes Spector committed, a crime against fashion should be added to his list of offences. Al Pacino can be seen sporting a rather nasty afro, among other horrendous, and eye-offensive, clothing and hairstyles.

The HBO movie will be released on March 24.
