JOE

We have a new Irish beer, a superb summer blockbuster and some interesting happenings in Dublin’s city centre for you this week.

Clonmel 1650

Keep an eye out for the latest beer in town, Clonmel 1650. Produced by C&C Gleeson, the new Pilsner-style lager should be appearing in a pub near you soon.

Launched in Dublin’s The Church pub this week at a Damien Dempsey gig, the drink takes its name from the famous siege of the Tipperary town in 1650 and from our brave representative who went down to the launch to try, the word is it is very tasty indeed.

Only available on draft, you should start to see it in your local boozer real soon, so give it a try.

Keep your eyes peeled if you are in Dublin on Saturday

We don’t know about you, but we do like a wander around town of a Saturday. We don’t mean shopping either, we mean genuinely wandering around. The city centre is a wonderful place, from the green spaces like the Iveagh Gardens and St Stephen’s Green to the modern spaces down around Grand Canal Dock.

This Saturday a little birdie has told us that if you are on a perambulation about the city you should keep an eye out for a cool installation on Dublin’s Coppinger Row, just off South William Street. We’ve been sworn to secrecy as to what has been planned, but we’ve been promised it will be well worth your while searching it out.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (AKA Space Avengers AKA A-Holes Assemble – 121 minutes/12A)

Tip of the hat to you Marvel, you’ve only gone and done it again.

What initially seemed like a massive risk by the superhero studio has now turned out to be an absolute masterstroke, as relatively unknown director James Gunn (Slither, Super) has taken an obscure comic book source material and successfully delivered one of the biggest, best and funniest sci-fi films of all time. Seriously, he has.

Just like the first fantastic film trailer that was released, Guardians Of The Galaxy is the perfect blend of crackin’ characters, awesome action, a magnificent musical mixtape and, in keeping with the recent Joss Whedon-inspired Marvel tone, more top quality comedy than you could shoot a space blaster at.

Plot’s it all about? After stealing a mysterious, ancient orb in the far reaches of outer space, human Ravager, Peter Quill/Star-Lord AKA Han Solo AKA Cpt. Malcolm Reynolds (Chris Pratt), becomes the target of a Galaxy-wide manhunt led by the maniacal Kree terrorist known as Ronan the Accuser – trust us, this guy really loves accusing people.

Joining Quill on his adventure is the gorgeous green-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), brilliant bounty-hunting buddies Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel), and colossal convict Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); the five joining forces to become, that’s right, you guessed it, the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

It honestly feels like this film was personally made for JOE. It’s our type of sci-fi, it’s our type of action, it’s our type of humour. And, with absolutely no word of a lie, if you do not like this film then we can never be together. It’s over between you and us, so it’s probably best that you pack your bags and leave right now. If, however, you fall head over heels in love with this mega-fun mob of Marvel movie heroes, then we’ll see you at the next available screening. It’s your turn to buy the popcorn by the way.

Enough of our gushing of just how good it is though, check out that very first fantastic trailer once more to get an idea of exactly what we’re talking about. Get ready reader, you’re about to be hooked on a film…

Guardians Of The Galaxy has just blasted its way into Irish cinemas so what are you waiting for? Go see it.
