Scientists at the University of California in Los Angeles are currently working on a pill that helps to reduce the blood alcohol level in the body.
According to a report in this morning’s Metro, the researchers said that it might help to reduce liver damage caused by alcohol abuse. The scientists fed lab mice alcohol and then administered them with the capsule containing cocktail of alcohol oxidase (AOx) and catalase (Cat).
The researchers found that the blood alcohol levels in the mice reduced by 10 per cent 45 minutes after the furry critters went on a binge of pints and cheap alcopops (in fairness, it was probably standard issue lab alcohol) and by nearly 37 per cent after three hours.
The researchers said: ‘Nanocomplexes containing AOx and Cat could offer an alternative antidote and prophylactic for alcohol intoxication.’
However, this doesn’t really sound like the right solution to the underlying problem. While the pill might ‘sober you up’ and get rid of the alcohol quicker than a cup of coffee and large breakfast roll, it doesn’t sound like it will stop you from wanting to drink in the first place.
