Never mind the rugby, Katie Taylor fought twice and won twice this weekend. Good to have you back in action Katie.
The undisputed brightest star in the Irish sporting world in 2012 was Katie Taylor. After claiming gold in London Taylor took a well-earned break from action before resuming her career this weekend. And, like Dublin Bus, after waiting for ages we were treated to two in quick succession.
On Friday night Taylor was at the Irish National Boxing Championships in the National Stadium. She was scheduled to fight Poland’s Karolina Graczyk and her return to the ring went smoothly, resulting in a 28-5 win for the home-town favourite.
Then on Sunday she moved to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre for the first of her Road to Rio bouts. Promoted by Brian Peters, these semi-exhibition bouts are in part to prepare Taylor for the European Championships later this year and in part to capitalise on the huge desire to see the 26-year-old in action.
Taylor easily defeated German opponent Maike Kluners last night and the above snap, with Taylor shrouded in the smoke of her big budget entrance, is just a great picture of one of Ireland’s top sports people.
Taylor returns to the same venue for her next fight, on March 22.
