Swing Copters makes the frustration of Flappy Bird seem like a walk in the park.
If you were lucky enough, or unlucky enough, to download Flappy Bird before the developer Dong Nguyen took it down in February then you will have experienced the addictive nature, and huge frustration, that came with the game.
Easy to pick up but impossible to master it was the ultimate in quick mobile gaming until the Vietnamese developer removed it from app stores claiming that he could not handle the level of success the game had (50m downloads).
The game inspired many, many clones but Nguyen promised to make another game and after teasing us with this trailer earlier in the week it was released today.
Available in the App Store and Android Store for free, or ad free for €0.99, Swing Copters is very similar to its flappy brother.
This time you are guiding a little helicopter, vertically rather than horizontally, past a series of barriers. By tapping each side of the screen you can keep the copter between the obstacles but it is prone to veer off if you hold one side for even a fraction of a second too long.
We won’t embarrass ourselves by revealing our best score so far (it is in the low single digits) but on first play it doesn’t seem to be as easy to pick up, or as addictive as it’s birdy predecessor.
Perhaps it will take a bit longer for the Swing Copters bug to bite but if it even has a tiny percentage of the success of Flappy Bird, it should net Nguyen a very handy windfall.
