The former F1 driver clashed with Nicholas Prost in the first round of the competition in Beijing earlier.

Prost was leading going into the final corner of the inaugural race in China when Heidfeld tried to overtake him.

The Frenchman appeared to swerve into the path of Heidfeld, sending the 37-year-old’s car crashing towards a barrier.

Heidfeld was able to walk away, somehow, and even angrily confronted Prost as they left the track.

He said afterwards: “Thankfully I’m okay. It surprised me that it didn’t hurt more.

“I pulled alongside Nico before the last corner and there was nothing I could do.”

Prost, for his part, denied any wrongdoing.

“I didn’t see him and it is disappointing to lose the victory like this. I was in the middle of the track when I braked for the corner, just to be safe.

“But he was next to me and already hit my wheel. I didn’t think he would try something like this. There is no way to overtake there.”
