Another installment of the best sports documentaries in the world…
ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentaries are up there with the best TV you will ever see in your life. The topics are always interesting, the archive footage is excellent, the contributors are fantastic and the way they direct and tell these amazing sports stories is something else.
We’ve spent countless hours watching 30 for 30 films with ‘The Two Escobars’, ‘Ceasefire Massacre’ and ‘The Marinovich Project’ among our favourites. Some great news for fans of the series though because seven new films are set to be released before the end of the year. Check them out here…
Playing for the Mob – The “Goodfellas” and mobster Henry Hill tell the story of how they helped orchestrate the fixing of Boston College basketball games in the 1978-79 season.
The Day The Series Stopped – This documentary focuses on the Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred during the 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics.
When The Garden Was Eden – Directed by actor Michael Rappaport the film explores the only championship years of the New York Knicks, when they made the NBA Finals in three out of four seasons.
Brian and The Boz – This is described as a revealing portrait of a man who had and lost it all. Former Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth looks back on the mistakes he made as his alter ego “The Boz,” and passes on the lessons he learned to his son.
Brothers in Exile – This film tells the incredible story of Livan and Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, who risked their lives to get off the island of Cuba. Both went on to have brilliant careers in Major League Baseball.
Rand University – The film tells the story of American football player Randy Moss who was an exceptional wide receiver but also carried a lot of baggage and demons off it.
The U Part 2 – The first sequel in the 30 for 30 series. It follows on from the first film which looked at the University of Miami football program and Part 2 delves into how the Hurricanes program has been able to regroup from NCAA sanctions.
The series will return on ESPN which the first film set to air October 7.
