Ireland’s newest MMA champ, Cage Warriors welterweight champ Cathal Pendred, will defend his title on June 1, in Dublin, against UFC vet Che Mills.
Earlier this month we were delighted to be able to bring you an exclusive stream of Cathal Pendred winning the Cage Warriors welterweight belt by beating Frenchman Gael Grimaud in London.
Now we have news of his first defence of that crown, and the fight will be taking place in Dublin, in The Helix.
Today Cage Warriors announced that The Punisher will fight UFC veteran Che Mills on June 1, with the welterweight belt on the line.
Mills, 30, was recently released by the UFC but with 22 MMA fights to his name, and 15 wins, the home town fighter will not have an easy first defence. That said, Pendred is looking forward to it.
“Fighting in my own backyard in a venue full of crazy Irish fans against a guy who was in the UFC until very recently, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to defend my title for the first time,” said Pendred,
“I can guarantee that the calibre of my opponent and the atmosphere the Irish fans will create is going to bring out the best in me.”
Mills was saying all the right things too. “I’m really excited about this opportunity. This fight will be a war, but I’m not leaving without the belt,” he said.
Cage Warriors 55 will also feature a four-man flyweight title tournament and details about tickets and times will be released shortly. We can’t wait.
