Betting on the League is a tricky, tricky business, unless you happen to live in Connacht it seems, as two lads from there hit Paddy Power hard this weekend.
The GAA accumulator is a tricky one to pull off. Whatever hopes you might have of picking a fair few winners on one of the big Championship weekends, the League is another matter altogether.
Between managers experimenting, star players absent for a variety of reasons and the dreaded ‘heavy week of training’ it often happens that a team that was exceptional the previous Sunday can be diabolical the next.
But the only benefit of that is that while it is hard for us to pick winners, it is hard for the dreaded bookie to judge the odds too and occasionally a big win will be scored for the little fella.
This weekend it happened. Twice. First to hit big was an unnamed punter from out west who put €20 on this 10-match bet and it landed, winning the lucky fella €5,500. None of the bets were too outrageous either, with Roscommon’s win over Monaghan he nearest he had to a long-shot. Shrewd betting there.

But that bit of slick gambling was beaten by another fella from the province, who picked three score-margin bets in one accumulator. He picked Mayo to win by 4-6 over Donegal, Dublin to win by 7-9 over Down over and Kerry to win by 4-6 over Cork.
For just €50, that man is now €11,500 better off this morning. The chap we spoke to in Paddy Power about the bet called it ‘weapons-grade punting’ as he sobbed into his Racing Post. No, we didn’t feel sorry for him either.
