Appointed Galway boss this week, Walsh came to the aid of his club after an injury crisis, and picked up a medal.
There can’t be too many inter-county managers who are still winning trophies with their club but Galway’s new bainisteoir Kevin Walsh certainly is.
The 45-year old was appointed as Galway football manager this week but yesterday he proved he is still capable of togging out if he has to.
His club Killanin were in the Galway Intermediate final against Moycullen but an injury crisis had left the team struggling for players. Walsh was named as a sub after his playing role was kept secret and the management surely hoped he wouldn’t need to be called on.
But with the game still in the balance with six minutes to go, Walsh, a three-time All Star and twice an All-Ireland winner stepped into his old stomping ground at midfield.
According to RTE, he won his first ball and set Killanin on their way to a three-point win, 0-13 to 0-10. It is also reported that he spent some of his time on the pitch marking fellow Galway legend and All-Ireland winner Paul Clancy.
