As Michael O Muircheartaigh might say, he comes from Mayo and was playing in Malaysia; neither a hurling stronghold.

As anyone who plays it or has played it can tell you, hurling is a very skilful game and a difficult one to master and it can often take years to reach a level where one is confident enough to play at a competitive level.

Mayo man Conor Melvin illustrated just how steep a learning process it can be when playing for Seoul Games at the Asian Gaelic Games in Malaysia recently.

Conor only took up hurling this year and while playing in goals in a match during the tournament, he got a bit carried away while bursting out of his area and missed with a wild attempt at a puck up the field, tumbling onto the ground and losing his helmet in the process.

Brendan Cummins he was not…

Stick to baby steps Conor and you’ll master it eventually, we have no doubt.
