One Under 10 team in Wales have a rockin’ sponsor. Not that any of them will know who Def Leppard are…
The tradition of bands and sports sponsorship is short and undignified. There was Wet Wet Wet’s short lived sponsorship of Clydebank in the 1990s and The Prodigy sponsored an Under 13 football team in England last year. That’s about it but now aging rockers Def Leppard have thrown their weight behind a Welsh Under 10 rugby team.
According to the BBC, a team called Rhiwbina, based near Cardiff, have got the band’s logo emblazoned on their chests as one of their coaches, Richard Proctor, does the band’s artwork.
In fairness, the jersey’s look pretty good and lead singer Joe Elliott told the BBC they did it: “because Richard is a long-time friend of mine and he works closely with the band. When he told me he needed a sponsor, I jumped at the chance, only afterwards did I realise it was a rugby and not a footy team!”
Ah well, at least his heart was in the right place.
