The Anfield icon looks set to end a glittering career at the club…
Much like when Alex Ferguson left Man Utd, there are Liverpool fans of a certain age who probably can’t remember a time when a Reds team didn’t feature their iconic talisman Steven Gerrard.
The end may be near though as various media outlets have reported this evening that the Liverpool skipper is set to leave his boyhood club this summer with LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls leading the race for his signature.
Gerrard has only six months left on his contract at Anfield and was formally allowed to listen to offers from other clubs as of this afternoon.
Regardless of which club you support, there’s no doubting Gerrard’s qualities which has seen the England midfielder establish himself as one of the greatest midfielders of the Premier League era.
The 2005 Champions League winner has been the darling of the Kop for the last 17 years and they were only chanting his name this afternoon as he scored twice from the spot against Leicester.
During his time at the club the midfielder has won two FA Cups, 3 League Cups, the UEFA Cup, the Super Cup and most famously he inspired Liverpool to that famous win over AC Milan in 2005.
Gerrard is expected to face the media tomorrow where the news will be formally announced. So Liverpool fans, what do you think?
Here’s what his close friend and teammate Jamie Carragher has said about the news.
Sad day for Lfc & English football with the Gerrard news, I think it’s the right decision all things considered.
