A lovely mix of the brilliant, catchy and cheesy.
Prepare to feel old, so very old.
All of these songs made their debut on the airwaves in the magical year that was 2000 but this might have slipped your mind especially if you were like JOE at the turn of the millennium.
We spent those 12 months locked away in our makeshift bomb shelter due to the fear of Y2K destroying the world.
Have a listen to some of these nostalgic gems.
1) Queens of the Stone Age – Feel Good Hit of the Summer
Josh Homme grabbed the world’s attention with this superb opening track from the bands second album Rated R.
“Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol…co,co,co,co cocaine”, is still one of the most ‘I don’t give a shit’ rock ‘n roll lyrics that’s being given in the 21st century.
2) Mark McCabe – Maniac
In our defence, we did say that this list would be cheesy. That being said, go out for a few drinks in your local town on a Saturday night and ask people to recite the words of Amhrán na bhFiann.
Cite the following lyrics, “she was a sexy lady, she had to get her thrill” and look at the difference.
You would swear that Maniac is Ireland’s national anthem.

3) Eminem – Stan
The trials and tribulations of the worlds obsessive fan still packs as much a punch now as it did after the first time that we heard it.
It remains Eminem’s most impressive, personal and powerful piece of work to date.
4) U2 – In a Little While
It’s still too early to play Beautiful Day and we can’t shake the image of Lara Croft hanging out with an ‘elevated’ Larry Mullen from our heads so we’ve opted for this track.
Oh yeah, it’s also the best song from the album with some of Bono’s best lyrics.

5) All Saints – Pure Shores
We really liked The Beach but the lead song from the soundtrack is probably the best thing that this JOE associates with Danny Boyle’s film.
The dream-pop, lush and chilled beat is brilliant.
6) Outkast – Miss Jackson
Forever, forever, ever, forever, ever?
7) Papa Roach – Last Resort
Because teenagers need a song that channels all their woefully misplaced hatred to the world. Emo’s are probably still angry at their parents for taking away their Lego after hearing this song.
8) Bloodhound Gang – Bad Touch
Here’s a little JOE experiment. Play this song out-loud and if you’re not singing along to it then we will pay you €5*
Note: This agreement in’t a legally binding contract as we currently don’t have 5 cents in our pockets nevermind €5.
9) The Avalanches – Since I Left You
And the award for best album of 2000 goes to?
10) Coldplay – Shiver
Before he met Gwyneth and started trying to be Bono with a British accent, Chris Martin was an aspiring rock ‘n roll musician.
Parachutes is a stunning album that made the world stand up and pay attention to this new band named Coldplay.
We saw this performed live at Slane when they opened for U2 and we’ll take this over Fix You any day of the week.
11) Ryan Adams- To Be Young (Is to be sad, Is to be High)
Before he started releasing albums every second week, Ryan Adams was at the absolute height of his powers on Heartbreaker.
Any song that features in the Old School soundtrack is fine by us but this shot of infectious country rock ‘n roll is sublime.

12) Craig David – Fill Me In
While it’s hard to take Craig David seriously at all, Bo ‘can I get a reeeeeeeewind’ Selecta did a pretty good job with that, his breakthrough album ‘Born to Do It’ has some slick beats.
This is our favourite song because JOE can also relate to sneaking around with girls when we should have been studying. It’s there fault really.
13) Jay Z – Big Pimpin’
If ever an opening NSFW lyric summarised an entire song then it’s this one. That beat though. Jesus, it could turn even the most boring guy in a nightclub into a wannabe player.
14) Spiller – Groovejet
We like to think that Victoria Beckham has a dartboard of Sophie Ellis Bextor in her house somewhere that she scolds at every day. We must be out of our minds for thinking this way. Dane Bowers sheds a single tear.
15) Blink 182 – All The Small Things
There was a time when Tom was liked by the other members of the band.
All these songs without mentioning the following;
Carlos Santana / Rob Thomas – Smooth, Destiny’s Child – Jumpin Jumpin’, Mystikal – Shake Ya Ass, Macy Gray – I Try, Dr Dre – Forget About Dre and this dancefloor classic.
