That’s gotta sting.
Anyone who has used a public bus, Luas, train or DART has probably, at some point, lied about how far their journey is to get a cheaper fare.
If you do it, your journey is incredibly nervous because of the fear that the driver will ask you to get off.
However, the worst case scenario though is if an inspector gets on and checks your ticket.
According to the Irish Independent, that’s exactly what happened a DART user who happened to be travelling on an expired ticket for EIGHT months.
The guy bought an annual ticket from Drogheda to Balbriggan, but continued travelling to Blackrock DART station without paying the extra fare.
The punishment for doing that – a fine of €5,544.
The man paid €1,160 for his annual pass from Drogheda to Balbriggan, while the correct fare from Drogheda to Blackrock is €3,040.
Irish Rail were actually kind of lenient because they could have applied a €100 penalty per journey, but instead they totted up the single fares he owed from the eight months.
Play by the rules people.
