We’re as shocked as the audience was.
Last night, Jon Stewart caused much sadness amongst fans of The Daily Show when announcing that he’ll soon be leaving the show that he’s made his baby for the last 17 years.
Stewart revealed the news to a studio audience that had no idea of his intentions, although many viewers on television would have been aware as the news had circulated on social media while the show was being broadcast.
During a speech that mixed Stewart’s trademark humour with more than a little emotion, he revealed that he was not going just yet, but was looking forward to life outside the show and being able to do things like having dinner with his family on a school night.
Arguably no show has tackled political satire like The Daily Show has with Stewart at the helm over the last 17 years and while the show will go on in his absence, he’ll be sorely missed.
