Video: Limerick’s Kevin Downes once starred in a class William Tell-style hurling trick shot video in NUI Galway

An oldie but a goodie

Conor Heneghan

And a brave man he is too.

The helmet is a vital piece of equipment in the game of hurling as it goes a long way to preventing head injuries in probably the fastest field sport in the world.

It also once allowed one of the game’s better known exponents, Kevin Downes of Limerick, to play an unenviable role in a class hurling trick shot video which was shot while he was studying in NUI Galway.

The video is a bit of an oldie but we only got wind of it after it was sent our way by one of Downes’ contemporaries in NUIG, Bryan O’Loughlin, this evening.

Downes is indeed the man sat on the chair with the object (is it a coffee cup?) placed on top of his helmet and the man who expertly removes it from there with a deadly accurate puck is one Shane ‘Hands’ Culligan.

Sure, you’d never fear anything the Munster Championship could throw at you after putting yourself through something like that.

You’re a braver man than us Kevin, we’ll give you that.

Hat-tip to Bryan O’Loughlin for sending this one our way
