He passed the baton on to the runner-up.
German Eurosong winner Andreas Kummert has turned down the chance to represent his country at the Eurovision Song Contest, just moments after the audience had chosen his song ‘Heart of Stone’ as the winner.
Moments after the result was announced, he took the microphone and told presenter Barbara Schoneberger: “I’m really not in the right shape to accept this.”
Instead, he announced that his title would go to 24-year-old runner-up Ann Sophie, who looked confused by events.
She was asked is she even wanted to accept her reprieve, which she eventually did before hugging Kummert and going on to sing her entry ‘Black Smoke.’
Kummert – who won The Voice of Germany in 2013 – gave no further explanation for his withdrawal.
