This week’s second round ties served up some scintillating football and as per usual, there were some things we loved and some things we hated…
Chelsea’s negative tactics caught up with them, Bayern crushed Shakthar, while Schalke gave Real Madrid a fright and Porto were in cruise control.
Here’s what we loved and what we hated from this week’s action.
LOVE
Thiago Silva’s spirit
A great deal has been said about the despicable behaviour during Chelsea’s game with PSG, but one player who can hold his head high is Thiago Silva.
When he gave away a clear penalty he didn’t complain to the referee. He then had the strength of character to score in the other end.
Bayern’s masterclass Seven goals in a game in Europe’s elite club competition. You can’t ask for any more than that.
Hate
Chelsea’s negative play To play 90 minutes against 10 men and not put them to the sword is criminal. Wednesday was an example of everything that’s wrong with Chelsea; negativity, poor defending of set-pieces and an unwillingness to experiment.
Basel’s defence
After Basel drew with Porto in the first leg, we fully expected a close return game. That never materialised and the Swiss side’s defensive display would leave a school boy side feeling embarrassed.
