If it was up to us, we’d make Termonfeckin the rude place name capital of the world.
Immature as it sounds, most of us still can’t suppress a giggle when we happen upon a place with a rude name.
Sure hasn’t Uranus been the butt of many jokes for years despite being stuck in the arsehole of the solar system?
Geospatial consultant Gary Gale obviously likes a good immature laugh as much as the rest of us, as having first concocted a map of rude place names around the world in 2013, he’s come up with an updated version.
And Ireland features quite heavily.
The inclusion of towns such as Muff in Donegal, the aforementioned Termonfeckin and Hackballs Cross in Louth will probably come as little surprise.
But had you ever heard of the village of Cum near Lahardane in Mayo? Dripsey in Cork? Bastardstown in Wexford?
Residents of these places and towns nearby will know them well, of course, but this is the first of time we’ve heard of some of them so kudos to Gary Gale for his exhaustive research on the matter.
If you have a few minutes, you can scan the world map of rude place names in its entirety here and maybe plan future holidays in glamorous-sounding locations such as Little Dick Lake or Middle Spunk Lake in the USA, Yorkey’s Knob in Australia or Cock Bridge in Scotland.
We think we’ll stick to Muff thank you very much, even if the chance of innuendo is very strong not just in the town itself, but the surrounding areas too.
