How to dress for your end of year debs

Which bow-tie will Johnny Handsome chose though?

JOE

School’s nearly out for summer – it’s time to celebrate.

Depending on which part of the country you’re from you might know this party as the debs, the grad, the prom, or maybe its just your end of year ball.

Here at JOE we have put together the complete guide to dressing for your debs, and how not to make a complete balls of it.

First things first, some tailoring terminology. Whether you plan on buying your first suit, or renting for the occasion, it’s important to get the lingo down.

Three Piece Suit – Like the name suggests, this is a suit made up of three pieces, the jacket, the waistcoat, and the pants.

Double Breasted – This refers to the cut of the jacket, a double breasted jacket will have a wide overlapping front flap. Usually with 6 buttons, 3 on each side.

Cuffs – These are the buttons the jacket’s sleeve. Traditionally 4 buttons.

Gorges – The gorge is the two V-shaped indents on the lapel of your jacket.

Break – Where your pants meets your shoe is known as the break. The general rule of thumb is that your pants should break below your ankle.

Unless your invite specifically says ‘Black Tie’ (meaning you are required to wear a full tux), the debs is a great opportunity to have some fun with your style choices.

The Classic Black Suit

The black suit is a classic for a reason. It suits most guys, whether they are big or small. The colour isn’t hard to wear, and you’ll get plenty of use out of it.

The downside is that if you choose the black suit, it’s likely you’ll be dressed the same as 200 other lads there. This is where accessories come in to play. Set yourself apart with an interesting shirt and bowtie, or a bright pocket square.

This is another great staple to have in your wardrobe, but it’s vital you get the right shade of grey. Light grey suits are the obvious choice, so why not stray from the pack with a charcoal grey?

As before, it’s the accessories that bring your suit to the next level. You can add some personality to your look with a patterned shirt. Bring in some colour with a bright tie, or a pocket square.

The Blue suit

Wearing a blue suit is a bold move will make you stand out, that’s a fact. What’s important here is how you put the rest of your look together, and ensure that you are standing out for the right reasons.

You can tone down the rest of your look with a classic white shirt, a solid tie, and brown leather shoes to complete the look. Or not. Style is all about personality. If you’re the kind of guy who likes a bit of colour, then embrace it. Layering different shades of blue will give a strong look. This could be a blue suit, paired with a patterned blue shirt, and a navy tie and pocket square.
