Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley talks about his alcohol abuse and reveals shocking photo of himself

One of our favourite bands growing up

Joe Harrington

This is a very sad story.

Sum 41 are a band that should bring you right back to your teenage years.

Their album All Killer, No Filler defined that American Pie era and lead singer Deryck Whibley became a household name.

Hard times have fallen on Whibley and he’s finally opened up about years of alcohol abuse which has left him in a pretty bad way this time last year.

The ex-husband of Avril Lavigne spoke to Noisey about his recent illness which saw him suffer with a collapsed liver and kidneys.

The rock and roll lifestyle took its toll on Whibley and his body took a real battering. Here’s a picture he posted last May.

However, the 35-year-old is keen to get back on stage and is learning to walk again normally after muscle-wastage saw his ability completely hampered.

Whibley says,”I am dying to get onstage. I don’t know what to do with myself. I feel like I’m ready.

“That’s the only thing that’s been keeping me going and working hard. Everything in my life is to get back onstage.”

He added, “It’s unfortunate that it had to even come to that. However, now I’m feeling better than I’ve ever felt.

“I’m healthier. I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m more productive. Well, I was always really productive, but I was just good at being a functional alcoholic.”

It’s harrowing stuff but fingers crossed he can stay on the straight and narrow and get back on stage soon.

Hat-tip to Noisey.
