INFOGRAPH: Majority of people think prostitution is damaging to women involved

This is a big issue in Irish society

JOE

On any one day it is estimated that there are somewhere between 1,000 to 1,500 women involved in prostitution on the island of Ireland.

We did a survey to discuss men’s attitudes on this very important issue.

Here are the key findings:

The difference in male and female views on why men buy sex is certainly interesting.

The majority of male respondents believe men purchased sex because they are not in a relationship, while the majority of female respondents think men buy sex to get sexual practices their partner is not willing to engage in.

The use of technology also makes for interesting reading. Sixty per cent of respondents think the most likely place men buy sex is online and almost the same number agreed that it is now easier to buy sex than it was five years ago.

Almost three quarters of respondents hold the view that prostitution isn’t only damaging to the women involved, but it also cheapens men.

While interestingly, only six per cent believed women gained freedom from prostitution. This is further reflected in the statistic that over 4 in every 5 people surveyed think that women who become prostitutes do so due to poverty or some other vulnerability in their life.

Prostitution – We Don’t Buy It” is the first all-island campaign aimed at men and boys about prostitution and sex trafficking. It’s part of the REACH campaign which focuses on violence against women in sex trafficking. It’s asking men to make a stand against prostitution and sex trafficking.
