It’s time to celebrate the quiet men.
Lynx Black likes what they do. We’re talking (quietly) about men who cut through all the noise with their immense talent.
Mark Zuckerberg is one such.
He lets his epic acting talent do the talking and we thank him for it.
Without further ado, here’s the profile of one of our favourite quiet icons…
The early years
From an early age, it was clear Zuckerberg’s future lay in technology. While at high school he built a music recommendation program called Synapse Media Player.
Well before Facebook, he also created an instant messenger system called ZuckNet. This allowed all the computers in his house and in his father’s dental surgery to communicate easily.
This was a very impressive system at the time.
The college years
By the time Zuckerberg went to Harvard it was clear he was a programming genius.
While in college he built CourseMatch. This allowed users to make class selection decisions based on the choices of other students and also to helped them form study groups.
His next project Facemash was controversial as students were able to rate other students in terms of ‘hotness.’
The site became so popular that Harvard had to close it down as it was crashing their servers.
The start of Facebook
The instant popularity of Facemash planted the seed for Facebook in Zuckerberg’s brain. So in 2004, he started writing the code for what was originally known as ‘Thefacebook.’
This site was launched on February 4 from Zuckerberg’s dorm. It started as just a Harvard only site, but later extended to Columbia, New York University, Stanford, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn, Brown, and Yale.
In 2005 it dropped ‘the’ from it’s title and opened up its borders to people in all across the world. Zuckerberg was becoming one of the most powerful entrepreneurs on the planet.
Facebook has grown year on year. In 2008 it had roughly 100 million users. Today it has approximately 1.35 billion.
Fame
2010 saw the movie Social Network released. This was roughly based around development of Facebook.
That year also saw Zuckerberg win Time Magazine’s Man of the Year.
Since then Zuckerberg has gotten married, continued adding to his considerable wealth (which is today estimated at $34.8 billion), became a LGBT activist and gave a whole load of money to a number of deserving charities.
All while keeping a relatively low profile.
An immensely talented man, who has always let his talent do the talking. And he’s still only 30.
