The Word in Westeros: JOE’s short review of last knight’s episode of Game of Thrones

Send a raven

Paul Moore

Send a raven.

Being that we’re absolute geeks maesters on all things Game of Thrones, we’ve decided to do a weekly recap of the best moments from the most recent episode.

The first episode saw the new season start in flames, literally for Mance Rayder, but last night saw the heat being turned up on Daenerys. Make sure you check out our first episode recap in full by clicking here.

As ever, SPOILER ALERT! Here are some of our favourite moments.

Master of Quotes – Best Line

Sam on Jon: “He might be young, but he was the Commander we turned to when the night was darkest.”

Game of Thrones

The North Remembers – Best Scene

Sam’s rousing speech that sees Jon elected as the 998th Commander of the Night Watch was the standout moment, especially since it made Janos Slynt look like the cowering and “marshmallow for a spine” fool that he is.

We still reckon that Ser Alliser Thorne won’t be going quietly into the long night though, while there’s many on The Wall that still don’t trust Jon completely.

Kudos also for the scene in Dorne as Ellaria rallies her king to avenge the murder of her husband Oberyn, while the sight of Bronn as a ‘gentleman’ lord was strangely hilarious.

Did anyone else think that The Night’s Watch tokens looked like crackers though?

Mmmmmm, delicious, tasty, voting crackers.

Valar Morghulis – Best Death

The timing of the poor decapitated dwarf was the epitome of the black humour in Game of Thrones, but Brienne and Podrick’s escape from Littlefinger’s knights was definitely the best sequence.

We did love seeing that sword slice through the random knight’s neck.

GOT knight neck sword

Subcatergory: Body Count – 3 of Littlefinger’s henchmen, 1 dwarf, 1 Son of the Harpy and 1 Mereen citizen.

GoT X-Rated

No filth in Westeros this week. Down with this sort of thing.

Mother of Dragons – Best Beast Scene

It seems that Drogon is going through those awkward teenage years – staying out all night and acting out against his mam.

Drogon

Sticks and Stones and Swords – Best Insult

Varys: “Cersei has offered a lordship to the man that brings her your head.”

Tyrion: “She ought to offer her c**t. The best part of her for the best part of me.”

You Know Nothing – The WTF Moment

A man is not Jaqen H’ghar.

We would love to get him and Yoda in the same room as each other. That chat would be third-person gold.

Stealing The Throne – This Week’s Best Character

A tough week to decide, especially since Sam proved his worth yet again by doing what’s right, while Arya’s persistence in seeking vengeance has led to a new and exciting door opening for her. Literally.

We’ve opted for Daenerys though, because she’s starting to learn that ruling means having to make unpopular decisions and sticking to your convictions.

The mad king must be proud.

From Wicklow to Westeros – Where did Aiden Gillen’s Irish accent land?

More close to home this week as the Cornish tones seemed to have faded on the road.
