“Roy Keane with a captain’s goal for Manchester United”.
The Champions League resumes again tonight with no English representatives in the last-eight of Europe’s elite competition but things were very different during the 1998/99 season.
16 years ago today, Man Utd travelled to the Stadio delle Alpi for a colossal meeting against Italian giants Juventus.
The first-leg finished 1-1 at Old Trafford and United made the worst possible start in Turin, Filippo Inzaghi’s brace ensured United were 2-0 down after just 11 minutes.
When the chips were down it was Keane’s commanding performance, unbreakable will-to-win and refusal to be beaten that dragged United back into life.
His header on 24 minutes cut the deficit while further goals from Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole ensured United’s passage to their first European Cup final in 31 years.
Sadly for Keane and Scholes, they wouldn’t play any part in that famous night at the Nou Camp against Bayern Munich due to suspension.
The fact that Keane played on, knowing that he was going to miss the showpiece match, is testament to one of Man Utd’s greatest captains.
Take a look at some of the match highlights from Keane’s finest match in the red jersey.
