Best quit while you’re ahead, mate.

In JOE Towers, we often hear stories of successful and very lucrative accumulator bets, but it’s not often that the punter is still in his teens and the winning sum of a money is a life-changing amount.

Overnight, JOE reader Joe Redmond brought to our attention the tale of his friend, Patrick Whelan, an 18-year old from Wexford who won’t forget last weekend as long as he lives.

On Saturday afternoon, Patrick put on a seven-fold accumulator bet with Paddy Power worth €10, all on horses that, according to Joe, were highly-fancied to win.

Even still, he thought little of it until later on Saturday evening, when he checked his account and to his astonishment, found that his account had been topped up by a little over €50,000.

Obviously shocked and elated, Patrick then reacted as many an 18-year would and rounded up a load of his mates to watch the Mayweather v Pacquiao fight on Saturday night, which was enjoyed with more than a few crates of beer bought with Patrick’s winnings.

Joe tells us that Patrick, an equestrian worker, is currently withdrawing €10,000 a day from his Paddy Power account to lodge to his bank account and that he plans on buying an Audi and never betting again.

Not many gamblers get to go out at the top like you Patrick; well played fella.

Hat-tip to Joe Redmond for sending this one our way
