Pic: A graphic on Sky Sports over the weekend claimed that Rory McIlroy is from the USA

Ah here

Jesus, as if Rory’s nationality issues weren’t already complicated enough.

Until Jack Grealish came along, few sports people that have represented Ireland in the past have had as much focus on their national identity as Rory McIlroy.

The world’s number one golfer recently publicly declared that he will represent Ireland in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, putting an end to a long and often unfair debate about his intentions in the international arena.

It’s a can of worms that we were hoping would remain closed after McIlroy’s decision, but then this graphic on Sky Sports opened it up all over again as the Holywood man blitzed the field at the Wells Fargo Championship over the weekend.

To be fair to Sky Sports, the graphic was probably the work of the host broadcaster in the US and not their fault, but it’s a mistake that would not have gone down well were it a tournament taking place on this side of the big pond.

Confusing Rory as an American is not a mistake we’d expect to be made; after all, it’s not G-Mac we’re talking about.
