We knew attending an Irish wedding was expensive, but this expensive?

For the most part, Irish weddings are an absolute blast but they do come at a cost; once you agree to go along you already know what you’re letting yourself in for.

Much like seeing your bank statement at the end of a heavy weekend, you don’t realise the amount of money you spend until you see it in black and white and the average cost of an Irish wedding does not look pretty on paper.

According to a survey by Bank of Ireland and weddingsonline, guests at an Irish wedding will spend an average of €800 PER WEDDING, taking into account factors such as accomodation, wedding outfits, the stag/hen party as well as the amount of pints drank over the course of the day.

€800 is slightly down on the figure of €1,080 which arose in a similar survey conducted by wedding website One Fab Day earlier in the year, but it’s still quite a hole to have burned in your pocket, particularly if you’re attending a number of weddings in a short space of time.

The study also revealed that only 30% of Irish people save money specifically for the cost of attending a wedding and that the vast majority of those surveyed provide between €100 and €150 as a gift for the happy couple.

Not surprisingly, 94% said they would like to receive hard cash rather than a gift on their own special day.
