This female referee will make history in the Championship on Sunday

A big day for Maggie Farrelly

Tony Cuddihy

Maggie Farrelly will become the first female referee to officiate a GAA Championship game this Sunday.

Farrelly, from Cavan, will take charge of the match between Fermanagh and Antrim at Brewster Park having refereed women’s games for years.

She previously took on sideline duties for the league clash between Kerry and Dublin at Croke Park in January 2014.

Farrelly started out officiating in Ladies Football but she was asked by her club, Laragh United, to help out in the men’s game in 2006 as there was a shortage of referees in the county.

“I didn’t read too much into it at the time and was just happy for my name to go forward to help out the club in any way I could,” Farrelly said last year.

“I never anticipated that I would come this far in such a short space of time. Honestly, at the time it was a simple case of doing something to help out the club.”
