No wonder they’re as fit as fiddles.
The level of effort required of an inter-county GAA player, particularly at the highest level, is hardly a secret these days.
If you want to make it, you have to put in the hard yards and the sheer amount of hard yards required has been illustrated in a very interesting graphic by GAA analyst Ray Boyne.
According to Ray’s graphic, an inter-county player at the top level, in both codes, will run 600+miles between training and matches in an average season. They’ll also sprint approximately 2,000 times or make and make upwards of 300 passes and 400 tackles.

The graphic is based on a similar study on Cristiano Ronaldo and the latest piece of fascinating GAA information from Ray, who was worked with the Dublin footballers amongst other teams in the past.
Previously, Ray documented that some players dedicate 800 hours or more to GAA throughout the course of a single season, studied the distances covered in GAA compared to other sports and was even able to make a comparison between Hurler of the Year Richie Hogan and the great Andres Iniesta.
