An Ohio man has reportedly been left blinded in his left eye after making the unfortunate mistake of leaving his contact lenses in overnight.
Speaking to Buzzfeed, Chad Groeschen said that his eyes began to itch constantly, leading him to believe that he had developed some kind of infection. Soon enough, however, Groeschen was unable to see out of his left eye and went to see a specialist.
(Here comes graphic image number one.)
Unfortunately, the doctor diagnosed Groeschen with an infection of pseudomonas bacteria which had grown between his eye and his contact lens.
Groeschen was stunned by the news, especially since he purports to have been wearing ‘extended-wear’ contacts, which can be worn for up to four weeks.
Groeschen is now faced with the stark reality that he must undergo a complete cornea transplant if he is to regain sight in the eye.
(Now for graphic image number two.)
According to Dr. Thomas Steinemann, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, sleeping with contact lenses significantly makes corneal infection far more like, whether or not the contacts are ‘extended-wear.’
