Fans of the Irish national team have had to sing through some almost-unendurable defeats in order to win their ‘best fans in the world’ tag, but pundit Richie Sadlier has said that the label makes him ‘cringe’.
Sadlier, who has cemented his place on the RTÉ panel over the past few campaigns, was critical of the low attendance at the Aviva for yesterday’s crucial clash with Georgia.
“We often hear the phrase ‘best fans in the world’, I often hear that and I cringe every time I hear it. There is no sign of them here tonight.”

Last night’s official attendance was 27,000, little more than half of the ground’s capacity despite the win which puts Ireland in a very promising position in terms of achieving a play-off place for the 2016 European Championships.
While there may be some truth to Sadlier’s sentiments, it is also possible that many Irish fans are being priced out of tickets, or that they may simply be ‘voting with their feet’ on the quality of the Irish team, as Pat Fenlon said.
