Fantastic but lesser-known Irish songs that should be loved worldwide

Spread the word

Paul Moore

Spread the word.

It’s remarkable that for a nation of Ireland’s size, our musicians and bands have had remarkable success throughout the years. While the likes of Hozier, The Strypes and U2 continue to sell albums at an incredible rate, other artists have had stellar careers that span decades.

The likes of Ash, The Frames, The Script and Kodaline won’t be short of fans whenever they play a gig that’s outside of these 32 counties but what about some other bands/artists.

JOE’s Sunday Sessions will always keep an eye on the best new talent in this country but I’m sure that Snow Patrol will testify to the remarkable power that one song can have in making a band ‘go big’.

Chasing Cars featured in a memorable episode of Grey’s Anatomy and the it took the band onto a whole other level of fame. Here are some other Irish songs that really deserve that ‘big moment’ which could elevate them from being an Irish favourite into a global one.

The Walls – To The Bright and Shining Sun

Would fit with: Some coming of age film that features smiling teenagers that are driving down Big Sur. Of course they’ll have to learn some important life lesson about acceptance and “finding” their place in the world.

National Prayer Breakfast – Feeding Frenzy

Would fit with: The newest (500) Days of Summer indie romantic-comedy rip-off that really wants to seem ‘with it’ by having an unknown track that’s going to be heralded as an instant classic.

Mic Christopher – Heyday

Would fit with: It’s hard to imagine anything that’s more perfect than the Michael Fassbender starring Guinness advert already.

Maybe they can turn that ad into a movie? Two brothers that are separated by the recession, forced to work abroad, but brought together for one wild weekend in New York. The Irish Hangover if you will.

Funeral Suits – All Those Friendly People

Would fit with: It’s the best song that has never been used to describe what it’s like to be young, on edge, in love and trying to find out who you are.

Hollywood never makes those types of films or TV shows. Do they?

All Tvvins – You Better

Would fit with: Some scene when the two characters shift for the first time on the dancefloor. Standard scene, blistering track.

Heathers – Remember When

Would fit with: Any Julia Roberts film that has ever been made.

And So I Watch You from Afar – Search: Party: Animal

Would fit with: A rousing montage before two characters/teams are about to beat the living crap out of each other. This is a song that would get your heart pumping before heading into war.

Royseven – Walls

Would fit with: You can already see synopsis now. A man returns to his family home in an effort to find some new meaning in his life. He then suddenly falls in love with the girl that he has known all his life.

Royseven are Bohemians fans also, there you go.

Director – Reconnect

Would fit with: Lovesick outsider undergoes some sort of quirky personality change in this new film by Judd Apatow.

A House – Endless Art

Would fit with: No classic film is safe from being remade so High Fidelity will probably be updated with Justin Bieber in the lead. They’ll throw this in to give it some ‘credibility’.

Le Galaxie – Midnight, Midnight

Would fit with: Personally speaking, I would love to have the moment at 2:39 just randomly dropped into the next Jane Austen film. People would lose their fu**ing mind.

While we can’t exactly include every single amazing song that has evener been recorded by an Irish artist, we also know that this is just the tip of the musical ice-berg.

Please let us know what your own choices would be.
