Ian O’Doherty has suggested that Liverpool should have a black armband sewn into their kits, given the number of anniversaries and deaths the club commemorates.
O’Doherty, speaking on The Sunday Show on Newstalk, was part of a discussion about James McClean’s decision not to wear a poppy this weekend.
The journalist said that the fact that everyone in the public eye, from sport stars to TV presenters to news reporters, wears the poppy is a sign of ‘increased mawkishness’ within British society.
He then fixed his attention on Liverpool FC, saying “they seem to go through so many commemorations of disasters and deaths that they should have just had a black armband just as part of their regular kit.”
Needless to say, his comments were not loved by some of the more sensitive Reds fans.
