Dublin couple who staged car crash for insurance scam caught out for stupid reason on Facebook

D’oh!

And they would have gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for that pesky profile picture.

A Dublin couple who pretended to be strangers so they could stage a car crash as part of an insurance scam were caught rotten after they were spotted in each other’s profile pictures on Facebook.

According to the Irish Independent, David Ward and Lynsey Ivory from Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempting to dishonestly, by deception, cause a loss to FBD Insurance between July 22, 2013 and January 1, 2014.

In the crash staged by the couple, Lynsey was driving a Volkswagen Passat that was rear-ended by an Opel Corsa in which Ward was the front seat passenger.

Both Ward and Lynsey claimed to be suffering from injury as a result of the crash but denied to the Gardai at the scene at the incident that they knew each other.

They continued the act while being taken to hospital in the same ambulance and, at a later date, both of them submitted an injury claim to FBD Insurance.

Both Lynsey and Ward could have been awarded up to €15,000 as a result of their claim, but while investigating the claim, a claims handler with FBD found that they both appeared in each other’s profile pictures on Facebook.

This was either a remarkable coincidence, or, as it actually turned out, evidence that the pair were actually in cahoots.

As if to confirm their suspicions, when Gardai turned up at Ivory’s home to arrest her after becoming aware of the evidence, it was her partner in crime Ward who answered the door.

Both Lynsey and Ward will be sentenced later today.
