The incident happened at Christmas in 2004.

Like many of you, Joey Barton was watching Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Manchester City this evening but the former Man City, Newcastle and QPR midfielder wasn’t just discussing the win for Wenger’s side.

In a series of tweets, it’s clear that Barton took umbrage with claims that were made by a former teammate of his at Man City.

In an article in The Mirror, Jamie Tandy claimed that an assault by Barton ultimately caused his career to go into free fall. You may remember the incident, it occurred in Christmas ’04 and it involved the former Marseille man stubbing out a cigar in Tandy’s eye.

Since the incident with Barton, the paper state that Tandy has been convicted of assaulting a previous partner in 2010 and he also pleaded guilty to common assault in a separate but more recent incident.

Here’s what Barton had to say about the article and the incident.
