The author of the books behind Game of Thrones has some bad news for fans

Carl Kinsella

Art can’t be rushed…

HBO’s wildly popular Game Of Thrones is based on the A Song Of Ice And Fire series, written by George RR Martin.

The only problem is that, as the show enters its sixth reason, its creators are running out of source material. That’s because Martin, who is 67, hasn’t finished writing the books – and it doesn’t look like he’ll be done any time soon.

In a statement posted to his blog, the author admitted that the sixth book (of seven), entitled the Winds of Winter, is not yet finished.

He wrote:

“You wanted an update. Here’s the update. You won’t like it.

The Winds of Winter is not finished.

Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You’re disappointed, and you’re not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed… but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, ‘I have completed and delivered The Winds of Winter on or before the last day of 2015’.

But the book’s not done.

I am going back to my stance from last March, before all this. It will be done when it’s done. And it will be as good as I can possibly make it.”

How the makers of the TV show deal with this remains to be seen, but we figure that the best way to go about things is a time-wasting, throw-away season 7 where Littlefinger and Varys solve crimes in Miami before returning to Westeros.

Speaking as to whether the show would ‘spoil’ the books, Martin said ‘yes and no’, and recommended that fans simply try to enjoy both.
