Bad news for anyone in Ireland who watches ‘American Netflix’

Carl Kinsella

Netflix are putting their foot down.

In case you didn’t know, Netflix users stateside have access to a wider range of programming and movies than we do over on this side of the pond.

That hasn’t stopped many of the more internet-savvy people out there using VPNs to get around Netflix’s geographical restrictions.

Netflix aren’t happy about this, and they’ve issued a recent statement saying that they’ll be further cracking down on these proxies, and protecting their content from online pirates.

David Fullagar, Vice-President of Content Delivery Architecture at the streaming giant has said:

“We are making progress in licensing content across the world and, as of last week, now offer the Netflix service in 190 countries, but we have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.”

“Over time, we anticipate being able to do so. For now, given the historic practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory. In the meantime, we will continue to respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location.”

So maybe you’ll finally have to go out and buy that The West Wing boxset.
