Éamon de Valera’s grandson angered by RTÉ’s ’embarrassing’ Rebellion

Éamon O’Cuív speaks his mind.

Éamon O’Cuív, TD for Galway West, has lashed out at RTÉ’s Rebellion drama for its portrayal of his grandfather, the former President and Taoiseach Éamon de Valera.

Speaking to Tuairisc.ie, O’Cuív took aim at the historical inaccuracies that dogged the portrayal of Dev and other historical figures.

“There is no basis at all in fact in the interpretation of Éamon de Valera by the makers of Rebellion,” he stated. “It’s embarrassing that RTÉ would spend so much money on something without proper regard for major historical figures like Markievicz, Pearse and de Valera.”

In the final episode of the drama, de Valera was shown throwing up in front of a firing squad, whereas anyone with even a modest grasp of Leaving Cert history will know that he did not face execution on account of the fact that he was born in the United States.

O’Cuív added that the timing of the programme, coming up to a General Election, was inappropriate and that it may sway people from voting for Fianna Fáil.

He felt that it was not right to portray real-life characters less than truthfully, even in the case of a drama.
