PIC: This very retro GAA jersey is on offer for nearly €5,000 on eBay

Conor Heneghan

A classic.

GAA jerseys have come on an awful lot from a style perspective over the years, but it would appear that some people place a lot of value on the garments worn in days of yore.

Ronán Gallagher, the PRO of Clontarf GAA club, got in touch with us overnight to point out that a club jersey from sometime back in the late 1970s/early 1980s (Ronán’s estimate) is available for purchase on eBay and for quite a price too.

£3,850.16 (approximately €4,955) to be exact.

Now, as you can see below, the jersey is nothing spectacular to look at and is pretty standard for that era, but the story behind it is quite an interesting one.

According to Ronán, at some stage in the past, a Clontarf substitute wearing the number 21 jersey forgot to hand it in to be washed and bizarrely, the jersey ended up in Poland, where someone thought it was very valuable and attempted to flog it for a ridiculous price.

Although the ad states that the jersey is from 1961-1965, Guaranteed Irish weren’t even in existence at that point so that can’t be right; something to bear in mind for anyone thinking of negotiating with the seller at any point.

Clontarf are thought to be considering lodging a cheeky bid for £3.85 based on the possibility that there must be a typo in the asking price; nice and all as it is, it’s hardly worth €5,000 after all.

Cheers to Ronán Gallagher for sending this our way. If you have something you would like to share with us, send it to our WhatsApp number 087-4001102, editorial@JOE.ie or hit us up on Facebook or Twitter.
