RTE have this afternoon revealed that they have appointed Dee Forbes as Director General following a rigorous recruitment process overseen by their board.

Forbes will take over the role from Noel Curran, who was appointed as Director General in 2011 and revealed at the tail end of last year that he would stepping down in May 2016.

Forbes is currently President & Managing Director of Discovery Networks Northern Europe and will leave the role to become Director General of Ireland’s National Public Service Media. She will assume the role in RTE later this year after a transition period.

Before joining Discovery, Forbes led Turner Broadcasting’s business in the UK and Ireland, which consisted of seven entertainment channels, including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and TCM.

Commenting on her new role, Forbes said: “Although it was a tough professional decision to leave Discovery, the personal decision to return to Ireland and lead its biggest broadcaster, RTÉ, is an opportunity of a lifetime.”
