Galway described as “Ireland’s most charming city” in glowing New York Times review

Conor Heneghan

Few who have visited the City of the Tribes will disagree.

People in Ireland and beyond have been aware of Galway’s charms for many a year and the west of Ireland city has had its ego further boosted by a glowing piece in this week’s New York Times.

Galway was the subject of the ’36 Hours In’ feature in one of the world’s biggest publications this week and author Nell McShane Wulfhart could hardly have been more fulsome in her praise.

Describing Galway as “compact, walkable and filled to the brim with independent shops and restaurants that walk the fine line between cool and kitsch,” Wulfhart mentioned a number of well-known Galway haunts in her tips for things to do over 36 hours in the city.

There was an endorsement, for example, for fish and chips in McDonagh’s, a pint in Tigh Neachtain and music in the Róisín Dubh.

Wulfhart’s feature will no doubt bring a smile to the faces of Galwegians, not to mention those who work in tourism in the area; you can read it in full on the New York Times website.
